The Process

  • In general, the most pioneering biology discoveries are made at academic institutions. However, as this biology is so new and innovative, there is difficulty in convincing commercial partners of the value of this research and external funds are not usually made available for project progression.
  • Consequently, the academic institution must either wait for the commercial world to recognise their discoveries or commercialise at a low financial reward.
  • This is clearly an unsatisfactory position and can lead to frustrations for the inventors.

Union Life Sciences aims to provide funding, resources and drug discovery expertise to academic groups with exceptional biology led research that can be rapidly converted to a pre-clinical entry point. It is envisaged that this will necessitate significant medicinal chemistry efforts with development of screening methodologies, synthesis of small molecule libraries, modelling studies where applicable and selection of lead compounds for additional studies. The ULS team is ideally placed to aid in these endeavours and to provide the platform for industrial introduction.
Early stage evaluation of newly identified projects is crucial for the successful development and progression of research programmes at Union Life Sciences. To aid in this important step, proprietary intelligence software from Biowisdom is used to interrogate a multitude of databases combining both literature and intellectual property related information. The robustness and speed of this technology enables rapid evaluation of significant quantities of data to provide valuable input for the decision making process.
